It is no secret that depression has become a worldwide health concern which affects more than 120 million people. Studies have shown that 21% of the world’s population will experience clinical depression at least once in their lifetime while the World Health Organization estimates that depression is one of the world’s most disabling diseases. Despite its increased popularity, depression still remains a mysterious condition which people don’t like to admit they are suffering from. After all, suffering from depression means that it’s harder for one to admit that they are failing at something or the belief that their future is hopeless.
Depression can manifest in one or more types. However, it’s important to understand that when suffering from depression, one exhibits at least five of the following symptoms; depressed mood, fatigue or loss of energy, recurrent suicidal thoughts, diminished ability to concentrate or indecisiveness, slowing thoughts or physical movements, hypersomnia or insomnia, significant weight loss, diminished interest in almost or all activities you used to enjoy etc. That said, there are a few types of depression some of which include bipolar disorder, atypical depression, postpartum depression, seasonal effective disorder and dysthymia.
